Coccopite from hazelnut shells has the potential to become a powerful new sector.
Coccopite is an imported product obtained by compressing coconut fibers as a soil alternative for soilless agriculture. Kokopit is seen as the landscaping and agricultural material of the future due to its high water retention.
Our Exchange contacted the Hazelnut Research Institute in June 2023 on the axis of the question and idea of “can coccopite be obtained from hazelnut shells?” and an R&D study was initiated; as a result of the studies carried out by the institute, coccopite was obtained from hazelnut shells with a pH value of 7 and the ability to hold 8 times its own weight of water.
In the written information provided to our institution by the Hazelnut Research Institute Directorate on the subject; it was understood that they are preparing for a “Utility Model Application” for coccopite-like material obtained from hazelnut shells upon the request of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies. They have also undertaken to provide more detailed information after the process is completed.
Considering issues such as “Green Transformation” and the protection and economical use of natural resources, coccopite to be obtained from hazelnut shells has the potential to become a strong and new sector.
